Boian Column draws on archaeological interpretations of an artifact that was found bearing a stepped pattern. This form has been theorized as part of a ritual structure associated with the axis mundi, or world axis. In this piece, the vertical motif is preserved while its ritual function is mechanized. The column’s ascending pattern is set in continuous motion, transforming embodied, durational worship into passive observation. The work examines how spiritual attention is displaced by technological mediation, as attention, effort, and participation are increasingly externalized.
